Ukrainian Parliament Delegation Participates in Key Meetings at the 147th MPS Assembly

The Ukrainian parliamentary delegation, led by the First Deputy Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine, Alexander Korniienko, is currently on a working visit to the Republic of Angola. During the fourth day of the 147th Inter-Parliamentary Union Assembly, the Ukrainian delegates have participated in a series of important meetings and general debates.

During the meetings, Ukrainian MPs emphasized several urgent issues, including the implementation of the peace formula proposed by President Volodymyr Zelensky, food security and collective responsibility for it, as well as the current situation in Ukraine such as missile attacks by Russia and their consequences, and the crimes committed by the Russian Federation against the Ukrainian people.

The First Deputy Chairman emphasized that achieving a just victory in Ukraine and peace on its territory are essential elements for global security. He called for international cooperation to achieve these goals.

In a meeting with the Kenyan delegation, the First Deputy Chairman invited the country to join the Second International Summit on Food Security and expressed hopes that Kenya would join international efforts to prevent Russia from violating its international obligations and blackmailing the world with food crises. Alexander Korniienko also informed them about the successful International Summit on Food Security held in Kyiv and the launch of the humanitarian initiative “Grain from Ukraine.”

The Ukrainian delegates discussed the recognition of the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people with the President of the National Assembly of Cape Verde, Austelina Tavares. They expressed hope that Cape Verde would vote in favor of the appropriate resolution.

During a meeting with the Chairman of the Cambodian Senate’s Human Rights Committee, Sem Yang, Alexander Korniienko highlighted the deepening parliamentary cooperation. They discussed their work on international platforms, particularly within the framework of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN). The First Deputy Chairman emphasized Ukraine’s role as a guarantor of food security and the country’s continued export efforts despite all challenges. The Ukrainian delegation also emphasized the importance of implementing President Zelensky’s peace formula and recognizing the Holodomor of 1932-1933 as a genocide of the Ukrainian people.

The Ukrainian parliamentary delegation also met with the Speaker of the Parliament of Ghana, Alban Kingsford Sumani Bagbin. They recognized Ghana as Ukraine’s largest ally among African countries within the United Nations. The delegation appreciated the visit of Ghanaian representatives to Kyiv and expressed the desire to strengthen friendly relations and bilateral cooperation.

During a meeting with the Speaker of the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Australia, Milton Dick, discussions focused on future arms supplies. The First Deputy Chairman emphasized the importance of these supplies in Ukraine’s fight and informed them about the energy security and the potential situation in winter. Alexander Korniienko also mentioned the need for air defense systems for Ukrainian cities to defend against enemy attacks. He expressed gratitude to Australia for its military and financial support to Ukraine.

In addition, the Ukrainian parliamentary delegates had meetings with representatives from France and Malaysia during the fourth day of the 147th MPS Assembly.

The Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation, Alexander Merezhko, participated in a meeting of the Committee on UN Interaction. He emphasized the urgent need for UN reform and highlighted the potential role of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in this process.

The Ukrainian delegates delivered speeches during the general debates of the Assembly. The First Deputy Chairman emphasized the desire for peace, justice, and strong institutions to ensure global security. He also condemned ongoing Russian aggression against Ukraine.

Other delegates, including Jean Beleniuk, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports, and Lesia Vasylchenko, member of the Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, highlighted the importance of supporting Ukraine and President Zelensky’s peace formula. Vasylchenko also introduced the Grain From Ukraine initiative aimed at addressing global food crises.

It is worth noting that the Ukrainian parliamentary delegation is visiting Angola from October 23rd to 27th as part of the 147th MPS Assembly. The visit includes participation in the assembly’s sessions in the capital city of Luanda.

The delegation includes other members such as Alexander Merezhko, Chairman of the Verkhovna Rada Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation, Jean Beleniuk, First Deputy Chairman of the Committee on Youth and Sports, Lesia Vasylchenko, member of the Committee on Environmental Policy and Nature Management, Olga Rudenko, member of the Committee on Foreign Policy and Inter-Parliamentary Cooperation, Oleksii Zhmerenetskyi, member of the Committee on Anti-Corruption Policy, Alexander Sanchenko, member of the Committee on Humanitarian and Information Policy, and Dmytro Shpenov, member of the Committee on Legal Policy.
