Ukraine’s General Prosecutor, Andriy Kostin, has recently signed the concept of the “Community Prosecutor” initiative, marking a significant step towards improving community safety and addressing the root causes of crime. According to the press service of the Office of the General Prosecutor, this initiative aims to select prosecutors from various regions and designate them as community prosecutors under the “Community Prosecution” project. These appointed prosecutors will receive additional training to enhance their skills and knowledge.
The primary objectives of the community prosecutors include conducting an analysis of the reasons behind criminal activities and developing strategies to prevent and combat crimes more effectively. Additionally, they will work towards adopting a people-centered approach in their work, collect information on the community’s needs and concerns, collaborate with local authorities, police, and other relevant organizations to develop comprehensive mechanisms for enhancing community safety. Furthermore, they will interact with community organizations and media outlets to ensure more informative communication on their work and its results.
The Office of the General Prosecutor has emphasized that this approach will not only help overcome the consequences of criminal activities but also eradicate the root causes of crime, ultimately enhancing community safety. To kickstart this initiative, a pilot project will be launched in four communities. The results and insights gained from this pilot project will be used to further refine and develop the concept, with the goal of implementing it across all regions of Ukraine.
It is worth noting that in addition to this initiative, Andriy Kostin has also signed the concept of implementing a mechanism to support victims and witnesses of war crimes and other international crimes. The Office of the General Prosecutor has announced the establishment of a Coordinating Center, which will work in collaboration with regional prosecutor’s offices, and will have dedicated coordinators responsible for providing support and assistance to victims and witnesses. This further highlights the commitment and proactive measures being taken by Ukraine’s General Prosecutor to address various aspects of crime and ensure justice and safety for all.
